The project
Brief
Segrate Boxe called us to photograph a fight night. Boxing is one of the hardest sports to shoot: everything happens in seconds, the light is what it is, and you cannot ask for a retake. They needed images to tell the story of the event and for the gym's communication.
The challenges
- Extremely fast action, with moments that do not come back
- Harsh overhead light, typical of a ring, with deep shadows on faces
- Ropes and posts always getting in the way
- No freedom to move around during the bouts
The solution
We worked at very fast shutter speeds and accepted high ISO, because a clean but blurred photograph is no use to anyone. Positions were chosen in advance, studying where the light fell and where the ropes did not cut across the frame. Beyond the bouts we looked for the moments around the ring, the corner, the waiting, the reaction: those tell the story of an evening better than the perfect punch.

The close exchange
Boxing happens in seconds and you cannot ask for a retake. Staying close to the ring and anticipating the punch is the only way to bring the image home.
